Gramophone, North American Edition, September 2005
A high level of artistry from an impeccable soprano... This is very fine.  Berenice Bramson was completely unkown to me before the arrival of this memorial issue, mostly recorded in 1984 with additions from 1985 and 1986...  Her voice is a lyric soprano of considerable body, even throughout its range, and her diction is impeccable.  In many famous songs here her interpretations can stand comparison with the very best - Arleen Auger in Wolf's Mignon, Elisabeth Soderstrom and Joan Rodgers in the Rachmaninov, Chreyl, Christine Brewer and Kiri Te Kanawa in the Strauss.  She brings the same high level of artistry to Britten's early song-cycle On This Island, in which her diction is so clear that every word can be understood, and her performance of Roberto Gerhard's Seven Spanish Folk Songs makes its absence from recital programmes a complete mystery.  The work by her son, Steve Bramson, who went on to a considerable career as a film composer, was written while he was a student at Eastman.  Obviously talent ran in the family, since this does not sound like student work... An enchanting hour and a quarter in the presence of someone who, whatever the vagaries of fame and career, was obviously a major artist.  Presumably there is more to come in this series and, if they are of this quality, then we can only regret that the singer herself is not around to receive the accolades they will undoubtedly deserve. - John Story

Fanfare, November 2005
Berenice Bramson (1929-1995) was clearly a recital and concert soprano with a huge stylistic range.  She sang in the world premier of John Corigliano's A Dylan Thimas Triptych with the National Symphony Orchestra in 1976, and she sang the soprano solos in Handel's
Messiah with the Buffalo Philharmonic in 1981 (to give two extremes of her stylistic range).  She did not have a major recording contract, and thus this disc is a welcome introduction for many of us to her considerable art.  This is singing of beauty, power, and a genuine vocal presence.  Bramson's voice has power and warmth, a rare combination, and at the same time the flexibility needed for some of Britten's more stringent requirements.  She Sings with sensitivity to text, with genuine involvement, and a thorough feel for the shape of the line.  Her pianist, Nancy Revzen, shares those qualities, and the result is an extremely gratifying recital.  In addition to the quality of the performances, the program is intelligently chosen to include a wide variety of musical styles that all fit together seamlessly.  Even the wonderfully colorful Gerhard songs, from some other source, seem right at home here... This is a superb recital of songs that will pay many dividends to the adventurous collector.  I hope there might be more of Ms. Bramson in the vaults.  If you love the song literature and good singing, you will not be disappointed. - Henry Fogel

American Record Guide, November/December, 2005
Wow! ... Berenice Bramson clearly a major talent... a woman of tremendous ability and skill.  Her "Zueignung" (Strauss) is lovely, as good as many of the very best singers.  Rachmaninoff's "Harvest of Sorrow" is dispatched with a passionate flair that characterizes all these performances.  The opportunity to acquaint oneself with such an artist is a welcome and happy one. - John Boyer
